With so much on our plate, it is easy to feel like there is never enough time to accomplish everything we want. If you have followed me for quite a while, then you will know how occupied I am with my responsibilities. I pursued a master's degree, juggled a full-time job as an English as a Second Language educator, and studied multiple languages on weekdays. I also ministered about my Christian faith over the weekends and cared for my family members. Nowadays, I have graduated with my master's degree, and yet I plan to continue to a doctoral degree. How can I still have time to live my life in between those tasks and responsibilities? The answer lies in mastering the art of time-blocking.
Time blocking is like your secret weapon. It's about breaking your day into distinct blocks of time, each devoted to a specific task or activity. Imagine having a structured schedule that not only carves out time for classes and study sessions but also for relaxation, exercise, and personal passions. And here's the cool part – free online tools like Google Calendar, Notion, or ToDoist can help you set up recurring time blocks for specific days or times!

With time blocking, you will not only boost your efficiency but also stumble upon pockets of free time you never knew existed. Personally, while time blocking, I realized I could turn my daily hour-long commutes into Spanish pronunciation practice or audiobook listening time. Plus, I can also turn those moments between student assignment submissions turned into calendar-planning opportunities instead of blank wall-staring sessions. By doing so, I could reclaim an additional two to three hours each day!
Priority Management: Eisenhower Matrix
How, then, do we get clear on our priorities? Remember, not all tasks are created equal, and it is essential to differentiate between urgent and important activities. This is where the Eisenhower Matrix, a nifty tool that sorts your tasks into four categories: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important, swoops in to save the day. By categorizing your tasks this way, you can work smarter and tackle the real game-changers first!

In my case, university club activities fell under the "important but not urgent" category, while my workload and my boss's demands landed firmly in the "urgent and important" zone. With this insight, I shifted my strategy. Instead of kicking off Monday mornings with club activities, I tackled my workload head-on. And here's a gem for you: ever heard of Parkinson's Law? It states that work swells to fit the time allotted for its completion. By prioritizing those tasks that are both urgent and important, I could find myself with an extra hour or two for something else I love!
